Parent Volunteer Opportunities
All parents registering with the Waves Swim Club are required to participate in volunteer support services. We need every family’s involvement, so the burden does not fall more heavily on certain parents. It is the volunteer efforts of individual parents that allow for the existence of the club, fund team operations, and minimize registration costs. Volunteer opportunities include Swim Meets, Board of Directors, Team Swim Officials, and Fundraising Activities and Events.
Swim Meets
Depending upon the swim meet and number of swimmers attending, participating teams are scheduled and required to provide parent volunteer timers for the meet. If the Waves Club does not provide scheduled timers, then the club is fined by Adirondack Swimming.
The host team decides the number of timers needed and designated lanes to be covered during a meet. Usually, we need to provide 1 timer or 2 timers for a designated lane for the entire session. The coach will divide the session into 30 to 45-minute time slots for each attending family to provide a volunteer timer. Prior to the swim meet, if the team is assigned to provide timers, the coach will send out an email requesting parents to sign up for shifts on our website. First time parent volunteers will be paired with another experienced parent for timing.
Board of Directors
The Lake Champlain Waves Swim Team, Inc. is governed by an elected 7-member volunteer Board. The Board meets monthly to review and make decisions on the operations of the club, including budgets, pool rentals, coaches, swim meets, and fundraising activities and opportunities. All volunteer Board members receive a 10% discount on their swimmers’ practice session registrations. Elections are held yearly during the End of Season Pizza Party/Swim-a-thon in March.
Team Swim Officials
To be a host of a USA Swim Meet, such as the annual Waves Winter Blast, Lake Champlain Waves needs to have a minimum of two (2) Volunteer Certified USA Swim Officials. Parents who volunteer to become an official will receive a 10% discount on their swimmers’ practice session registrations. Fundraising Activities & Events
Waves participates in various fundraising activities throughout the year, such as a night at Chipotle and an on-going bottle redemption at Skyway Redemption Center. Also, Waves hosts 3 major fundraising events each year: Waves Winter Blast, Swim-a-thon, and the Annual Waves Golf Tournament. Besides these activities and events, the Club is always seeking other fundraising opportunities and welcome suggestions.
Waves Winter Blast
This is our yearly USA Swimming team hosted meet held at the Ausable Valley High School in Clintonville, either in January or February. This was started in 2021 to allow all the Waves swimmers, including pre-team, to participate in a sanctioned swim meet close to home.
Since this is a Waves Team hosted event, all families are needed to assist with the various jobs that run the event including planning, collecting donations, picking up donations, setting up, timing, timing station attendants, officiating, runners, meet marshals, heat winner prizes to swimmers, ribbon prize secretary, and working raffle and merchandise tables.
Swim-a-thon
This is our major fundraiser of the year, which is held in March, and coincides with our end of the year Pizza party. Swim-a-thon is a 2-hour or 200 lengths swim. Swimmers may swim with partners, take breaks as needed, and use paddle boards, swim buoys, and/or fins, while swimming with music and receiving random raffle prizes. All swimmers are encouraged to collect monetary donations either prior to and shortly after the event. Volunteers are needed to assist with donations, collecting donated raffle and food items, event set up, and of course counting the laps for the swimmers.
Annual Waves Golf Tournament
This is a new fundraiser for Waves, which was just held for the first time in July 2024. The Golf Tournament, which was held at Harmony Golf Course, was set up for 20 teams, consisting of 4 golfers per team. Following the golfing, participants enjoyed food, beverages, awards, and raffles. Waves Families and swimmers volunteered their time promoting the event to golfers, collecting donations, sponsorships, making raffle baskets, setting up the tournament, bringing beverages to the golfers during play and assisting with the raffles and awards distribution.
